Specialised ADHD Counselling for Adults

At Safe Haven Psychotherapy & Hypnotherapy, Worcestershire, we are certified ADHD Clinical Services Provider (ADHD-CCSP) and offer specialised counselling for individuals diagnosed with ADHD. Our tailored therapy sessions are designed to provide personalised support for those living with ADHD. Whether you are professionally diagnosed or self-diagnosed, we are here to help.

I learned I had ADHD as an adult in mid-life.  To be honest, I can't say it was really a surprise, but finding out allowed me to learn about the biological effects of ADHD, how it develops, changes over our life-span (for example impulsive movement is less evident as you get older), the health effects and co-morbid conditions and that ADHD is genetic.

If you suspect that you are an adult with ADHD, being assessed and understanding that your behaviour is (to some degree) outside of your control can be the most empowering feeling.  If you know what it is then you can do something about it - right?

Understanding is key to being able to explore, adapt, manage and develop yourself in a new light.  For me, never being able to find things (or remember where I put them, or sometimes if I had even had them in the first place!) really knocked my self-esteem.  I knew I wasn't stupid, but for much of my life I felt it because I wasn't like the others at school, at work, in relationships etc.  If any of this sounds familiar it may be that you have ADHD (looking at a parent and identifying whether you think they have ADHD can be a really good indicator!).

Therapy sessions for ADHD allow you to explore who you are, how you interact and where you fit.  It gives you knowledge about being neurodivergent and tools to adapt and make it work for you.

Although I am not able to diagnose, I can assess you for ADHD and discuss your options moving forward, as well as learning about and accepting where you are, giving you everything you need to move forward with your life.

Personalised Counselling for Neurodivergence

Our counselling sessions for neurodivergent individuals with ADHD are tailored to address their unique needs. We provide psycho-education to help understand the genetic, social, and psychological aspects of ADHD, allowing our clients to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their issues.  We can explore where you are, your strengths and your challenges and look at how you make ADHD work for you.

Being neurodivergent can be challenging and isolating.  Often 'being different' can be seen as a hurdle to overcome.  By looking at your journey and experiences and understanding your 'inner world' therapy can help you to understand what is within your control and empower you to move forward.

Counselling for ADHD can also help you identify if you want or need a formal diagnosis and/or medication, signposting you for further medical support or formal diagnosis options.  As a therapist working with ADHD I am able to assess the likelihood of you having ADHD and signpost you further, however I am not medically trained and therefore unable to diagnose ADHD on your behalf.

For some people being formally diagnosed may be beneficial in education or the workplace, however it is not essential and regardless of whether you go down that route or self-diagnose, ADHD therapy can help you to find ways to understand your thoughts and behaviours and take control.

Nature Therapy and ADHD

Integrative psychotherapy, including nature therapy, can be highly beneficial for individuals with ADHD. Our nature therapy sessions offer a holistic approach to healing, providing a serene and calming environment that complements traditional counselling methods.  It can be hard to focus with ADHD and nature therapy offers an opportunity to indulge in the desire to keep moving, allowing a more sustained focusing ability, particularly with 'walk & talk' therapy.

Support for Families

We understand the importance of providing support for families of individuals with ADHD. For a longtime ADHD was thought to be a 'naughty boy' diagnosis socially and often mocked or ridiculed as 'made up', however, research shows that it is a genetic condition that effects all genders and ages.  ADHD and it's presentation changes over the life-span and presents differently in adults, teens and children as well as across both genders.  It can be hard for families to accept that someone has ADHD and difficult to identify the difference between 'typical teenager' behaviour and ADHD related behaviour.  Females often have better 'masking' and 'social' coping mechanisms that can make it less obvious to their parents, and many neurotypical individuals will display aspects of ADHD.

As a parent, trying to understand your child's behaviour can be challenging at the best of times!  As a child with ADHD negotiating behavioural impulses, social 'rules' and extreme emotions can be frustrating! Knowing that you are not alone, that there are things you can do to make everyone in the family's life easier and understanding what is going in the brain of somebody with ADHD can feel like a lifeboat in a stormy sea.  That's why we offer group therapy sessions at discounted rates, allowing families to come together and receive the support they need to navigate the challenges of ADHD.  These sessions are informal, interactive and open to anyone living with ADHD.
